59 De Ville
With a strong blues & jazz vibe 59 De Ville’s repertoire showcases a highly atmospheric mix of music across the two genres. Formed out of a jam session at Ain’t Nothing But blues bar, the band features jazz musicians Jeremy Robinson on trumpet and Jamie Royan on double bass & bass guitar, together with blues frontman Russ Varakuta on guitar & vocals and multi-instrumentalist Jerry Claydon on drums & vocals playing a fresh take on bebop and blues standards.
Jeremy Robinson’s jazz trumpet influences span the history of the art, from Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong, through Harry James, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Nat Adderley to Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan and Wynton Marsalis. For seven years he played in the London Big Band ‘Any Swing Goes’, five of those as lead trumpet, in venues across the capital including the famous 100 Club.
Jamie Royan studied bass and drums at ICMP (Phil Mann, Ben Jones) before joining the West London music scene playing bass guitar and double bass in blues, jazz, rock and classical settings. Jamie draws influence from the music of his youth (British pop and rock) and applies this to the music he loves to play, including bebop and blues.
Following in the footsteps of his brother Alex, a well-known rock and country singer in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, USA, New Yorker Russ Varakuta has taken the path less travelled on his musical journey and now finds himself a frequent guitarist-vocalist on the London jazz and blues scenes. His guitar influences include Robben Ford, Buddy Guy, and Jim Mullen, while his vocal style owes debts to Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, and Howlin Wolf.
Jerry Claydon studied music performance and theory at college, initially training on classical and jazz guitar before switching to drums and keyboard. His main influence is blues rock and he counts Ken Pustelnik among his drum heroes. As well as having played in several local bands over the years, Jerry is a regular jammer and occasional house drummer on the London blues scene where he has played with Jack Hutchinson, Aaron Keylock and others.
